Evaluation

1. In what ways does your Media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My chosen project was to create my own music video for an existing song. I used Lana Del Rey’s ‘Million Dollar Man’ (from the album Born To Die), which is a genre of ‘Indie Pop’,‘Alternative’ and ‘Chamber Pop’. The song is not a single released from the album, and also does not have an existing music video so it made the temptation easier to not replicate ideas from the original video and more freedom to portray my own music video.

The conventions of the music genre seem to be identified as jangling guitars, 60’s pop, and a melodic ‘power pop’ song structure, but is mainly dominated by Indie Pop. Similar artists include Nancy Sinatra, Marina and the Diamonds and Florence + The Machine and The New Young Pony Club, in which I have compared conventions in music videos such as Nancy Sinatra-Bang Bang, (My Baby Shot Me Down), Marina and The Diamonds- Primadonna, The New Young Pony Club- We Want To and also Florence + The Machine- Cosmic Love.Lana herself actually quotes herself as a ‘gangsta Nancy Sinatra’ I later found out in research.

Most videos of Indie Pop are of a narrative and performance nature. From the examples I looked at these were all like this. As my video is dominated by Indie Pop genre I think the audience for my video is likely to be female and male, but more elder teenagers (15+), but more likely to be more popular at the eldest of audience in their late 20’s.

The mise-en-scene in the majority of examples I watched play an important part in the narrative. In literally all these example videos they are based on 60’s 70’s retro vintage era. In Marina and The Diamonds the house she is based in all has furniture/décor which would have been popular in that era e.g.) velour bed throws, flock patterned wallpaper, frayed lampshades etc. In Primadonna and New Young Pony Club’s We Want To there is evidence of old fashioned televisions (this is also portrayed in Primadonna as the camera colouring is dated and like Vintage Polaroid camera shots). Lana Del Rey, New Young Pony Club, and Marina Diamandis all generally style their selves in 60’s/70’s/80’s clothing/Vintage fashion, including hair and make-up. Nancy Sinatra was originally from that era so that would have been ‘modern’ for her at the time. In the videos asides Marina’s, the others use more sepia tones to recreate the look of an old fashioned film camera, similar to Marina’s television screen technique. The scenes Lana uses are created for the surroundings to be like that area, i.e. the street- the shops look like general shops from the 60’s, instead of modern, like featuring a supermarket/petrol station, the cars are Morris minors, old Cadillac’s etc.

Like I said about Marina’s vintage furniture, I have myself an old red vintage dial telephone which I used as one of the main props for Emily in my video. She also uses it to sing down, but at the same time replicate she is having a conversation with her husband who hasn’t returned, begging for his re-appearance.

In my video I used conventions from this as I tried to replicate an old fashioned ‘Super 8’ camera for the‘home video’ scenes. I did this by experimenting with the colour correction area of effects on Adobe Premier Pro (the programme I used within which to make the Music Video), mainly experimenting with the Red, Green and Blue filters. The reddish tint makes it look like it is more vintage and aged film. I decreased the blue filters a little and increased the green filters more, but then increased the red filters the most. I also experimented with the contrast to make it a lighter picture which also made it look more ‘aged’. I also used the conventions of a more modern video camera device, using the ‘Rec.’(abbreviation of ‘Recording’ tool with the symbolic red dot) which made it look like it was being filmed with a stereotypical video camera from the‘boyfriend’s point of view.

Lana Del Rey closely associates her videos with culture such as war, presidents such as John F Kennedy, the 60’s and 70’s lifestyle and different interpretations of ‘The American Dream’ .It is different from many videos nowadays such as R&B where the imagery is hugely populated by audio-visual sexual nature. This is also inspired by film maker/director John Waters, and retro photographers Philip Lorca DiCorda and Juergen Teller. Del Rey also makes prologues or epilogues in some of her music videos, such as ‘Ride’ or ‘National Anthem’.
I used clips that add up to about 5 seconds from vintage footage similar to Lana Del Rey's music video conventions. This involves vintage footage of a paparazzi taking photos (from our POV) , and the other clips that I have used involve a TV 'colourblock' breaking off into no signal (fuzzy black and white screen) and also a timed flowerburst of a rose (which also signifies the artist's name). Del Rey usually uses footage from vintage TV commercials, old movies, historical pieces, retro home videos and other material similar.
I also took the codes and conventions from old cinema screenings, by using a stereotypical number countdown which used to be used in films before the film began in earlier cinematic days to prepare that the film was going to begin, which also added to my aim of my music video having a ‘vintage feel’.
Like many of Del Rey’s songs, she always has an influential lyrics constantly about love and romance, but with strong connotations about wealth, for example in Million Dollar Man, National Anthem and Burning Desire among some. In my video I represented this by making her wear luxurious clothes and jewellery such as a crystal necklace she wears in most scenes to represent her wealth. There is also scenes in which I took codes and conventions from various films and TV programmes of the stereotypical‘money throwing’ scenes within which also represents she is wealthy however also the question of now her husband has left her she has more money than sense, and that fortune does not make you happy in the long run. This is also portrayed in the scene within which she takes off her wedding ring.

In other scenes, when she is outside in a more run down area, it shows the contrast of her emotions, from when she is happy in the home video, to when now in ‘reality’ she is more upset as now what made her happy has left her life. She wears darker make up, her hair looks like she cares about it less (she made more of an effort when she was with her man) and wears leather/black clothing. I think stereotypically she picks up codes and conventions of the image of ‘rebellion’ like for example a misunderstood teenager, typically labeled as an ‘emo’ or ‘goth’ , with a similar, milder style. Or perhaps like a ‘motorbike chic’ who rebels against her parents, it gives the image she is trying to rebel and deal with her recent ordeal with her partner. I got this idea from picking up similarities from Lana’s ‘Ride’ video, in which she is a prostitute biker chic who hangs around with a Hell’s Angels type of gang and also various films, mainly comedy, like Big Momma’s House 2 in which the family he is looking after, their eldest daughter is gothic and a stereotypical portrayal of a rebellious teenager.

Also in other scenes, in the bed scene for example, I also tried to portray Emily rebelling against her recent broken relationship by revealing a little more flesh in the sense that now she is trying ‘to impress’other men now that she is newly single even though she knows deep down she still wants him. It also portrays the mild sex appeal that Lana gives in literally every one of her music videos but does it in a more artistic or romantic way rather than a RAP genre video for example where it is just of a mindless audio sexual visual nature.

2. How effective is the combonation of your main product and ancillary texts?

I think my ancillary texts look effective as they match up to the scenes of my video and establishes a relation between my main product and the ancillary texts. I used inspiration particularly from artist's ancillary texts such as Florence+The Machine for example.

3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?

I used various techniques to get feedback from people. This included interviewing various students (I filmed these using my phone camera), sharing my video on Facebook (a social networking site) and putting a poll on my blog which showed who would be most interested in my music video initially.

4. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and the evaluation stages?

Firstly, I used worldwide search engine Google to research indepth about my chosen artist and her main music genre and also if she (Lana Del Rey) had any influences. I also checked her official site on the internet to see if she had any other background information about herself other than online encyclopedia 'Wikipedia'. I also looked on Youtube at her music videos, she still has her own Youtube channel ('LanaDelRey') that she uploads to but she is also based on Vevo, which is a popular joint venture music video website (based on Youtube mainly) by Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group.

First Draft of Ancillary Texts

I created something simple for the first ideas of my Digipak CD Cover because I didn't want to make it too complex and 'overcrowded' yet still stand out.

I firstly 'touched up' my model, by making her skin look a little more flawless. I did this by the airbrush tool on Photoshop. I used the 'Lasso' tool to select the areas of skin I wanted to touch up and then duplicated the layer. This also reduces the amount of pixels which therefore makes it easier to work with.

I then repeated to duplicate another layer (duplicating the layer is done by pressing Ctrl+J), and then named both layers 1 and 2. I then used a surface blur filter. This helps when smoothing out the skin but still reserves the edges. I then set the radius and threshold, so it was blurry but the image was still recognizable. I then lowered the threshold till the edges on the picture became visibly sharp. This is the basis of the skin. On 'layer 2' I focused on any blemishes or visible pores on the skin. I clicked on the eye which is beside the name of the layer, and changed the layer blending mode to 'Linear Light'.

To relate to my 'home video'look which is in my video, I changed
the colouring of my photo to a 'vintage' sepia style discoloured look. Basically for this I just experimented with the 'temperature' and 'saturation' till I found a colour I thought was right for the photograph.

I was also attempting to make a 'film tape' frame around my photograph, but found it quite complex to do so. After searching on the net,I found pre-made 'film/photograph' frames that you could import onto photos so I decided to download one and added an extra layer onto my photograph, and added the selected frame I chose. This makes my cover look in sync to my video as it captures the image of a vintage 'home made video' recording.

For the text, suprisingly what inspired me was the famous beverage 'Coca Cola' 's font for their logo.

I think it looks quite 'fancy' and maybe does look like that kind of font is more 'girly' likely that what a male would choose for a font. For this I chose Vivaldi in Italic. As I wanted the first letter to be slightly bigger I eventually chose it to be in size 600, and the rest of the letters are in 200.
As I had a lot of greenery and a black frame I wanted a colour for the text that would stand out. As the colouring of the photo is slightly discoloured I decided I'd go for a cream/ivory shade. I chose the 'Vivid Light' shade for both the artist name and the album name.

I then chose a drop shadow/blend mode to add to the artist name. I used this to a -175 degree angle so it had quite a blended visible shadow. I then chose a slight outer glow which was very similar to my chosen colour to give it a 'bright' look. For the album name as previously said I chose the same colour and font to match. I put this in the bottom right corner but a little more raised up.
I put an Outer Glow on this also, and also put the Opacity to 75 percent and the font in size 150/italic.

Name for my Artist

I struggled to come up with a new name for my artist as I would like to think 'Lana Del Rey' is already something relatively unique in the first place. I actually got the inspiration from one of her songs from her updated EP 'Lana Del Rey: The Paradise Edition'.

I am going to replace Lana's name with 'Roses Belair' for my project. It is also in relevance to my music video as my actress's character is filmed in areas surrounded by flowers and also wears flowers in her hair in my music video. As my actress's character seems to have relevance to wanting the 'millionaire lifestyle' it also helps as I think Bel Air in America also portrays an area of the rich and wealthy.
